Kells

Kells is a charming fishing village situated on the beloved Ring of Kerry. It is a still, soothing location nestled between the picturesque towns of Glenbeigh and Caherciveen. A mountainous backdrop surrounds the premise with striking views of Dingle Bay and The Blasket Islands. From time to time the shining sun allows the exquisite South-West Coastline to peek through the trademark calming Kerry clouds, with locals to the region also recommending an area close by called ‘The Mountain Stage’ as the best place to catch a glimpse of the graceful North Atlantic Sea. Ancient railway tunnels scatter this scenery, accompanied by a meticulously hand-crafted ‘Gleesk Viaduct’, an old railway bridge from a bye gone era, assembled and engineered in 1892. (Fun Fact: This train line was operated by The Great Southern and Western Railway Company as late as 1960!)

Kells is also the restful home to one of Kerry’s finest Blue Flag Beaches, commonly known as Kells Bay. A perfect spot to stop and fish the day away or pop into Cáitíns Pub for a refreshing drink or an old folks tale that will be sure to guide you down memory lane. This specific area also welcomes Kells Bay Gardens. A

superannuated Victorian-style garden holding one of the foremost collections of Southern Hemisphere sub-tropical plants in Europe. Quaint, colourful foliage scatters through these picturesque gardens assembling originally from Australia but more recently from South America and New Zealand.

The overall area of Kells can be marked by the Ring of Kerry threading its way through the mountains of Knocknadobar and Been Hill. Rambling through the hills and valleys of this region allows for the perfect outdoor daytime activity, with plenty of fun and adventure to match. A stage of the ‘Kerry Way’ also passes through this region, so if you are into hill walking (plus much more) this is the place for you!
